NRP Course
Neonatal Resuscitation Program
Academy of Pediatrics/AHA

Course Overview
NRP is designed to provide healthcare professionals working with neonatal and newborn infants an evidence-based approach to care for a newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare providers. This course will introduce students through an evidence-based approach to concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Upon completion of this course, a NRP card will be issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Course Survey
For Successful Completion
Prior preparation is required for completion of this course. The current edition of NRP materials must also be obtained. These materials consist of the most current Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation. Supplemental material is available on this website. This helps the learner measure pre-course strengths and weaknesses and gives the learner areas for pre-course review.
Passing all assignments is required for issuance of an NRP Advanced Provider eCard.
Successful completion of this course is dependent upon the learner demonstrating satisfactory skills in the following areas:
-
Recognize the principles and need for neonatal resuscitation.
-
Identify the need for resuscitation and how to provide initial steps of resuscitation.
-
Identify essential equipment and ability to provide positive pressure ventilation.
-
Ability to perform chest compressions and endotracheal intubation.
-
Knowledgeable in the practice use of medications.
-
Understand special situations in neonatal resuscitation, including the use outside the delivery room.
-
Differentiate the indications and skills required in neonatal resuscitation for a preterm delivery.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course the participants will be able to:
-
Describe the physiologic changes that occur when the fetus makes the transition to extrauterine life.
-
State the steps to take when anticipating and preparing for the birth of a newborn.
-
Describe the initial steps of newborn care, including indicators for care at the radiant warmer including oxygen management and indications for CPAP.
-
State indicators for positive-pressure ventilation, signs that positive-pressure ventilation is inflating the lungs, ventilation corrective steps, and indicators for insertion of a laryngeal mask.
-
State the indicators for insertion of an endotracheal tube and the steps for preparation, insertion, securing, and assisting with this procedure.
-
State the indicators for initiating chest compressions, describe proper technique, and signs that indicate compressions may be discontinued.
-
State the indicators for epinephrine and volume expander and describe the proper techniques for administration and evaluation of this intervention.
-
State parameters for the use of post-resuscitation care.
-
Describe the strategies specific to resuscitation and stabilization of the preterm newborn.
-
Describe management of the newborn whose clinical status requires special consideration, such as airway complications and lung abnormalities, congenital anomalies, and complications due to maternal opiate or anesthesia exposure.
-
Describe the ethical principles associated with newborn resuscitation, what to do when a baby dies, and how to support parents and staff through the grieving process.
